Synthetic hormones are created by pharmaceutical companies to aid in restoring depleted hormones. The most common synthetic hormones used for HRT include testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, and insulin.
Synthetic hormones are manufactured using both man-made and animal sources. For example, synthetic estrogen is often produced from the urine of a pregnant horse and contains more than 40 different estrogens. But the human body only contains three estrogens! For that reason, synthetic hormones don’t match to human hormones, are less effective, and have higher side effects including increased risk for cancer. They are also prepackaged and cannot be individualized.
On the other hand, Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy is a natural approach that alleviates risks associated with synthetic treatments. Bio-identical hormones are extracted from plants such as wild yam and soybean, and they chemically match the structure of human hormones.
Unlike Synthetic HRT, Bio-identical HRT treats not only symptoms, but also the underlying causes of hormonal imbalance. It has been tested for more than half a century.
For these reasons, at MVEMENT, we have developed these basic guidelines for treating our patients:
- Only Bio-identical hormones are prescribed; we never use Synthetic hormones.
- Hormones are prescribed only when there’s a proven deficiency through proper testing and medical evaluation.
- Hormones are prescribed at the smallest dose possible in order to restore healthy hormone levels without side effects.
Bio-identical hormones are individualized and made specifically for each patient.
